The current energy system contributes to many environmental problems, including global warming, the consequences of which have already been felt for several decades.
The world of tomorrow will no longer be able to afford the pollution that we still experience today. New strategies are needed for a transition to clean and renewable energies. The Democratic Republic of Congo is at the center of this energy transition, with its large reserve of natural resources necessary for the manufacture of various batteries.
The Congolese Battery Council is a public institution that was created for the purpose of setting up, promoting and managing a value chain for the minerals used in the manufacture of batteries.
Our story
At the DRC-Africa Bussiness Forum conference held in Kinshasa in November 2021, President Tshisekedi reiterated his country's determination to manufacture batteries and electric vehicles. He invited his African counterparts to take ownership of the electric battery production project, and to insert Africa into the vast market of electric vehicles and clean energy.
President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and his Zambian counterpart, Hakainde Hichilema, have decided to strengthen their countries' position in the production of electric batteries by signing a collaboration agreement between the DRC and Zambia on the joint management of a battery manufacturing project. The two countries intend, through a joint project, to develop their lithium reserves.
The Congolese Battery Council (CCB) was created by decree of the Prime Minister Sama Lukonde on 6 December 2022. The purpose of the CCB is to manage the value chain of batteries and electric vehicles.
The organic structures of the Congolese Battery Council are :
- The Board of Directors
- The General Management
- The Board of Auditors
The purpose of the Congolese Battery Council is to manage the value chain of batteries and electric vehicles. As such, it is responsible for :
Identify partnerships to attract and promote investment, innovation and technology for the processing of strategic minerals used in batteries
To ensure the supply of raw materials to industrialists in the electric battery manufacturing sector
Propose and implement production standards for battery precursors and electric vehicles in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Propose and implement production standards for raw materials used in the manufacture of battery precursors and electric vehicles
Accelerate intra-African trade and collaboration to unlock the potential for innovation along the battery value chain
Initiate awareness-raising missions with partners to promote the exchange of innovative ideas to ensure the sustainable contribution of the battery value chain to the Congolese economy
Produce studies, statistical data and information related to the battery, clean energy and electric vehicle value chain in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Africa
To collaborate on behalf of the Democratic Republic of Congo with other battery councils around the world
